From Ms. Page's class: We are starting our Fall garden! Thanks to some great parents, we are ready to plant our vegetables. We talked about how to grow a plant, as well as what different vegetables are. We hope to have some great lettuce, kale, collards, and other veggies soon.

Mrs. Funk's first grade students recently spent time investigating apples. They used their scientific skills to observe and record data as they measured, weighed, predicted, graphed, labeled, and best of all, TASTED!

School of Excellence!

Van R. Butler Elementary School has been named a “School of Excellence” by the Florida State Board of Education. 

To be eligible, schools had to receive a grade of A or B in each of the most recent three school years (2014-15, 2015-16, and 2016-17) and had to rank at the 80th percentile or higher for their school stype for at least two of the last three years. There are 347 elementary, 116 middle, 96 high, and 84 combination schools that qualified as schools of excellence. Qualifying schools shall retain the designation for up to three years. 

Butler Elementary is one of five Walton County Schools, and the only elementary school in the district to earn this designation. 

From Mrs. Michie's Class

We had a special guest scientist (Mr. Michie) come do Halloween science experiments with our class the other week. Our class learned about the states of matter while experimenting with "Boo Bubbles." We also practiced the scientific method through our "Oozing Pumpkin" experiment. 

Mrs. Woods' class

Students in Mrs. Wood's 3rd grade participated in their first Grasses in Classes session this month with the help of the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance. Students learned about challenges with pollution faced by our local watershed and potted Smooth Cordgrass plants which they will plant in the Bay this spring to help filter out pullution and provide a better habitat for wildlife.
