MHS Celebrates Literacy Week, Florida!
Submitted by Heather Simmons
At MHS, we know that “Reading Changes the World!” Students started the week off with a door decorating contest. Each classroom read a book, learned a lesson from the book, and determined why that lesson is important in life! Then, they decorated their classroom door based on their book and the lesson they learned. The doors looked amazing, and we had 100% participation!
Students were challenged next to read 1 MILLION words on Tuesday. They devoured fiction and informational texts, took AR tests, and ended up the day reading 1,038,565 words!
On Friday, students participated in our annual Book Swap where they bring in old books from home and swap for “new” books to take home and read. Students loved picking out their “new” books, and I overheard a few saying they can’t wait to read them when they get home! It was definitely a successful week for literacy at MHS!

Submitted by Heather Stewart, Paxton School
Paxton High School’s Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Gaetz Aerospace Institute students recently traveled to Tallahassee, Florida for a full day of activities.
Students put their skills to the test during a simulated space mission at the Challenger Learning Center where they worked together to complete the mission including research, analysis and engineering. Following the mission and other activities at the center, students met with Representative Brad Drake during a tour of the Florida Capitol, followed by a visit to Florida State University’s robotics lab and $6 million wind tunnel.
Thank you to the Florida Space Grant Consortium for their generous grant support of this trip.
