5th grade students at Maude Saunders Elementary presented their first Genius Hour projects. These students are provided time each day to research a topic they are passionate about. Students then create a presentation of their choice to present to their peers. Brooke Oxley created a volcano and demonstrated how volcanoes erupt. Submitted by Brianna Leavins.
Dr. Richard Thomas, D.D.S., presented a character re-enactment of the famous Wild West dentist/law-man “Doc” Holliday at Maude Saunders Elementary school and Paxton School. The visit was sponsored by the Florida Chautauqua Association as part of their Winter Assembly educational activities. Dr. Thomas brought with him several original artifacts from the life of James Henry “Doc” Holliday, to include period dental tools, and Holliday’s actual foot-powered pedal drill. He also had with him Holliday's appointment "book," an ivory fan with one blade per day of the week on which appointments were penciled in. The book includes traces of Holliday's handwriting. Superintendent Hughes gave special recognition to the Teacher of the Year and the Educational Support Professional selected by the District Offices. Megan Dailey, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with the district, received the Teacher of the Year award. Sue Brack, with 27 years as a bookkeeper in the district, received the Educational Support Professional of the Year award.

Emerald Coast Middle School Art and Music students, 6th-8th grades only, attended a concert sponsored by Sinfonia Gulf Coast on Friday, January 20th at Destiny Worship Center. The “Musical Time Travel” production was part of the Paint the Music interactive arts project, which aims to foster an appreciation for the visual arts and music, while also encouraging students to express their creativity. The concert included performances by Sinfonia Gulf Coast and special guest violinist Jennifer Koh. 2D art students also participated in an art exhibition displayed at the performance. At ECMS, Ms. Vance's Media Production Class was treated to a Dunkin Donuts morning to kick of Florida Literacy Week, 2017. Her class demonstrates consistent literacy leadership, talented teamwork and daily stellar performances filming the ECMS Stingray Station News show.
