The American Geographical Society (AGS) has named Sammie Watson as a 2017 AGS Geography Teacher Fellow. Mrs. Watson is one of fifty teachers selected from across the United States to participate in the program in its second year. The AGS Geography Teacher Fellow program has been made possible by a generous gift to AGS from the Boundless Corporation.
Mrs. Watson teaches Advanced Placement (AP) Human Geography at Paxton High School in Paxton, Florida. As part of the award for being selected as an AGS Geography Teacher Fellow, Mrs. Watson will attend the AGS Fall Symposium on November 16 and 17, 2017 at Columbia University in New York City. The Symposium provides Teacher Fellows with the opportunity to gain valuable cutting-edge content knowledge and awareness of the real-world geographic workplace skills demanded by today's geospatial companies.
“We are very pleased to be able to have Sammie among 50 of the best teachers in the country join us in New York City in November," said Dr. John Konarski, CEO of the American Geographical Society. "The collective experience and expertise of these Geography Teacher Fellows will be an integral component as AGS leads the cause for the future of geography and geospatial science. In addition, the teachers will be able to bring back to their classrooms practical and cutting-edge information and applications of the latest advancements in the geospatial world," added Dr. Konarski. Butler Elementary is excited to host an afterschool STEM Club this year! For their first activity, participants were involved in a cup stacking challenge. The club meets once a week and is a school improvement initiative being to supplement the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics opportunities provided for our children. There will be two sessions, one for the first semester, and another for the second semester, for students in grades 2-4 who completed a signed interest application. We are so excited that we get to brag on Jordan Nichols, a Junior at SWHS. Jordan is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist. He is one of 16,000 Semifinalists in the US and will have the opportunity to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million. Jordan earned this distinction by taking the PSAT/NMSQT at SWHS. Last year Jordan was a member of the Walton County Academic Team that won the State Academic Championship. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Seahawk Tennis Team.
We congratulate Jordan for this accomplishment and encourage all of our Seahawks to take the PSAT seriously when it is given at SWHS on October 11th. Maybe you can follow in Jordan’s footsteps! Submitted by Barbara Stratton.
Twenty-one WHS Key Club students participated in the annual United Way Day of Caring on September 12. This year students worked at the ARC and helped clean up the property - trimming hedges, pulling weeds, and even killing a rattlesnake. They didn't leave without a few cuts here and there, but the feeling of helping neighbors down the street was worth it all! Submitted by Christy English.

Kindergarten students at Butler Elementary School have been learning about Community Helpers. When they had a chance to dress up and show what they want to be when they grow up, it was no surprise that there were a lot of “First Responders” in the hallways! Students in Mr. Bump's class reviewed their recent vocabulary by playing Vocabulary Password. Students worked in groups of 4 to determine the vocabulary words based off the clues their teammates gave them. Students only had 1 minute to guess the vocabulary words correctly before the timer went off. The students enjoyed working with their peers on this engaging review lesson.
